Hyperflares of SGRs as an engine for millisecond extragalactic radio bursts

چکیده
We propose that the strong millisecond extragalactic radio burst (mERB) discovered by Lorimer et al. (2007) may be related to a hyperflare from an extragalactic soft gamma-ray repeater. The expected rate of such hyperflares, ∼ 20 50 d Gpc, is in good correspondence with the value estimated by Lorimer et al. The possible mechanism of radio emission can be related to the tearing mode instability in the magnetar magnetosphere as discussed by Lyutikov (2002), and can produce the radio flux corresponding to the observed ∼ 30 Jy from the mERB using a simple scaling of the burst energy.

Diffuse high energy neutrinos and cosmic rays from hyperflares of soft-gamma repeaters
We calculate the diffuse high energy (TeV PeV) neutrino emission from hyperflares of Soft-Gamma Repeaters (SGRs), like the hyperflare risen from SGR 1806-20 on December 27 of 2004, within the framework of the fireball model. The fireball model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can explain well the main features of this hyperflare and the subsequent multi-frequency afterglow emission. The expected rat...

We propose that the best sites to search for Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) outside the Local Group are the galaxies with active massive-star formation. Different possibilities to observe SGR activity from these sites are discussed. In particular, we have searched for giant flares from the nearby galaxies (∼ 2 – 4 Mpc away) M82, M83, NGC 253, and NGC 4945 in the BATSE data. No candidate giant SGR ...

Pulsar surveys offer a rare opportunity to monitor the radio sky for impulsive burst-like events with millisecond durations. We analyzed archival survey data and found a 30-jansky dispersed burst, less than 5 milliseconds in duration, located 3 degrees from the Small Magellanic Cloud. The burst properties argue against a physical association with our Galaxy or the Small Magellanic Cloud. Curren...
متن کاملRadio Emission from Magnetars
We discuss properties of the expected radio emission from Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs) during their bursting activity in the framework of the model of Thompson, Lyutikov and Kulkarni (2002), in which the high energy emission is powered by the dissipation of super-strong magnetic fields in the magnetospheres through reconnection-type events. Drawing on analogies with Solar flares we predict t...
متن کاملAssessing Millisecond Proto-magnetars as Grb Central Engines
Magnetars are a sizable subclass of the neutron star census. Their very high magnetic field strengths are thought to be a consequence of rapid (millisecond) rotation at birth in a successful core-collapse supernova. In their first tens of seconds of existence, magnetars transition from hot, extended “proto-”magnetars to the cooled and magnetically-dominated objects we identify ∼ 10 years later ...
